Chromacopter

Chromacopter grew out of my desire for an improved version of the "Yellow Submarine", 1969 — another interactive sculpture that colors itself within the landscape and is accessible to children. It is the realization of my life's work.

Stainless steel provides a reflective structural material that is lighter and more durable than the solid bar stock used in the Yellow Submarine. My fabrication skill allows for curves to follow or oppose one another, which lends a sense of movement to the structure.

The colored media is a thin acrylic sheet that displays a variety of tones depending on the angle from which it is viewed. It can be a rich magenta, or blue, a gold mirror when light is reflected from its surface, or transparent when the light source is behind it.

All of this contributes to the dramatic changes that Chromacopter exhibits in the landscape as the sun moves across the sky, or the viewer changes position.
