Stained Glass
Style distinguishes the one from the many and may eventually describe a category of art. For the artist, success (in his own eyes and in the eyes of history) is achieved through a distinct style — his or her personal form of identity.
There is no surface for stained glass color to flow onto. Like a picture puzzle, it must be constructed — each piece of colored glass cut to shape and fixed into a lead matrix or armature. It employs mechanical skills I find congenial, and my methods fuse a modernist flair to a medium that has remained unchanged for centuries.
For a time, I experimented with this idea of bringing modern relevance to ancient symbols, but gradually, I came to rely on the effects of light, color, and structure alone. The animating effect of light on color and structure satisfied my search for a personal style.
